Death toll rises to 8 due to heavy rains in eastern Japan

The death toll from heavy rains caused floods and landslides in eastern Japan rose to eight on Saturday, two weeks after the same areas were hit by Typhoon Hagibis, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Landslides swept through flooded areas in the eastern and northeastern provinces of Chiba and Fukushima.

Areas were flooded in the third rainstorm in six weeks and in some places, in 12 hours, rainfall similar to that of a month, according to Reuters.

Evacuation orders and advice have been issued to residents along a large section of the Northern Corridor, which has already been hit by two hurricanes since last month.

The rainfall in the city of Ushiku in Chiba was 283.5 mm over a 12-hour period.

Authorities warned of possible further landslides and floods.

Typhoon Hagibis killed at least 88 people when it swept through central and eastern Japan with heavy rains and strong winds, seven still missing and more than 300 injured.
